I will be diving into a new project soon, and I’ve dusted off this book to refresh my memory on the writings of Lewis Carroll. While roaming an antique store a few years ago, I was fortunate to stumble across several first editions of annotated books. I bought them all!
The photo to the left does not show a copy as perfect as mine. I turn the pages, smelling that beloved musty smell, hearing the crinkle of the dust jacket, and feel like a little kid with a favorite toy.
The Annotated Alice holds the complete text from Lewis Carroll’s (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass with original illustrations by John Tenniel. The margin notations throughout explain thing like the history of Dodgson, the world of Alice, why a particular tea is mentioned, what was found in the original manuscripts, on and on an on. All updated through 1960, of course. There is a newer version (shown below) but it doesn’t smell as good.
